Women’s destiny has always been connected with a household, being a wife and mother. It was believed that women were inferior to men in emotional, spiritual and especially intellectual sense. Complex questions of obstacles to access to education and employment gradually formed confusion in the thinking of women, and caused certain inclinations leading them to feminism.

Today, gender equality is a global priority for UNESCO. It is inextricably linked to the actions of the Organization aimed at promoting the right to education and the achievement of objectives – Education for All, and the broader aims of development. However, women and girls still face numerous barriers to the implementation of the entitlement to and completion of education and its successful application in life. They include such difficulties as poverty, geographical isolation, belonging to minorities, disability, early marriage, pregnancy, gender-based violence, as well as traditional beliefs about the status and role of women.

Real progress in the field of institutions offering secular education for women started in the XIX century in the West, when there were the first colleges founded for separate education for girls.
